Lesson 4 points and reflections
Sunday, April 25, 2010
CSS stands for cascading style sheets. CSS is used to define how html element are displayed. Three ways to use CSS is internal style sheets, inline styles and external style sheets. In lesson 4 of IS, we focused more on external style sheets.
Styles are normally saved under external.css_files. I learnt that basically it changes the appearance and layout multiple pages immediately and it is saved in the same file as html. Each page linked to css.file uses link in the code. Without style, a html page will look dull and plain. But after using css, the page will look more colourful and complete. There is also the use of external media to put in videos, maps, etc. Basically thats what a basic css does. I find the website given very useful as I get to do the css myself and try out. That way I can learn how to do the css in my own way, which I feel is very useful in helping learn css. The notes were also very useful. Every css must also have a doctype in order to work. Basic css may look simple at first. But with all the information like backgorund-font,background colour etc, css can be complicated. My partner and I had a hard time configuring and solving the css "puzzle". IN the end we still managed to complete it, thankfully. This will be our last assignment before the test and it has been a interesting one. I hope to see more of new media in near future and hope that I would do well for the upcoming test.

IS lesson 3 points and reflections
Sunday, April 18, 2010

In lesson 2, we were discussing on the social impact of new media technologies, ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property and blog/website differences. I feel that the lesson was very interesting with everyone having different views. In lesson 3, we learnt about html and how to create your own website and upload things using new media technologies and Web 2.0. Any particular website like msn, facebook or google looks very user-friendly, informative, convenient. However, I realised that for all the links, tools, etc. these websites are actually very complicated and need a lot of brainstorming and hardwork.I learnt that to create and plain webpage with words only, we need to use html, aka Hypertext Mark-up Language, which is basically a "Mark-Up" text on how they will be displayed in a website. To do so, a notepad in windows is used. Firstly, type to indicate that it is html. All codings must end with a pair with a slash in between the arrow and the code. Then, there should be and ... and so on. There are also other codes like ..., ..., etc. However not all the code come in pairs. Such of those are,

,
,,etc. There may be a lot of codes to remember but once they are remembered, creating a webpage should be easy as the is a sequence in the coding. If links are to be put in the webpage, this is the code,..., and to link to a internal site, Contact Us, to link to a contact pagein a new window,Contact Us Given that all the steps to create a webpage, I believed it was not that difficult to create the webpage anymore. When my partner and I were doing the html site, it was indeed rather alright. I feel that being teached how to make a webpage is a privilege and will be helpful be it when we are creating a page for projects in future or when we are working. Thus lesson 3 on html was a meaningful one to me.

IS lesson 2 points and reflections
Friday, April 2, 2010
After the first week of school, it is now already the end of the second. The second IS lesson was mainly about reflections on Web 2.0 and the new media. For the first half of the lesson, we were allowed to touch up on our first week's assignment and edit of blogs. After which was lesson 2. During the first week, we learnt about Web 2.0 and about new media, such as how the internet works, its histiry and teminology, IP address, thumnails, how the internet uses graphics, audio, etc. This week, we were tasked to reflection and discuss on what we feel about new media and web 2.0. Thus, three discussions forums were set up to share personal opinions on these 3 topics, the social impact on new media technologies, ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property, and blog/websites differences. I was under the category 1, the social impact of new media technologies. What I feel it means is that how the internet and modern world gadgets affect our way of interacting with the world. A lot has changed since technology improved and the discovery of the internet. For example, a mobile phone has allowed us to relay messages from one place to another. In a few decades, even the mobile phone may be considered old-fashioned given the speed of technology development. The internet is also the new big thing which is ultimately changing our way of life. The internet used to be a place where the creator of a site is the only one using the site. With web 2.0, everyone can now interact online. Gaming, entertainment, emails, commerce, etc, are some of the different sites. Now, people don't write letters anymore, they email. Even assignments in schools are sometimes online. People tend to depend on the internet a lot and it could change our lifes completely. But it isn't always for good. Recent years have seen social websites such as Twitter, Facebook, coming up as the latest way to socialise. However, how much can we consider this socialising. We only can chat, find out what our friends are doing online, but it isn't the same when we meet together in the real world rather than its virtual counterpart. There are some things which the virtual world cannot do when the reality can. Also, by posting what we do online excessively, is there any privacy left for us anymore. This is about the first topic and the second was about ethical issues on media usage and intellectual property. I commented on one of my fellow classmates view on the issue, and we both agreed that copyrights is something which sometimes people neglect. When the is a copyrights law on a product, the owner has the rights to distribute it. Thus, when people want to use it, they must seek permission from the owner or state the source they took from in their work. However students sometimes absent-mindedly forget this. I feel that this forum was a enriching one and I hope for more to come in future.

IS lesson 1 reflection
Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Lesson 1 of term 2 IS was about the introduction to new media. New media is about the internet and how is it being used in this internet era. Things like blog, entertainment websites or social networks or also new media. The internet has changed a lot since it's concept was founded in the 1960's. Technology used when using internet has changed over the years. It has vastly improved since. What used to fit in a building can now fit in a cellphone to ascess the internet. In approximately 25 years, it can be fit into a blood cell. Technology is changing the way we perceive the internet. The terminology of the internet was shared and look how much it has changed. The way we perceive it is also changing by the day.the internet used to be a application or tool where everyone can ascess and see. In recent years, websites like social networks, entertainment websites, educational websites are increasing by the number, thus changing the way people see the internet. Web 2.0 is upgraded from Web1.0, and it differs as in Web 1.0, only the site creator can manage the site while in Web 2.0 not only the creator is allowed to do so. I generally feel that new media is an interesting topic about our new found world of the internet era .Also, other points of the lesson were how to access to the internet, analysing an IP address, identifying the components of the web browser, the purpose of the web browser, searching for info on the web, different websites and how they use graphics, animation, audio, video, virtual reality and plug ins,web publishing, types of e-commerce,how email.FTP and chat rooms, etc work, and rules of netiquette. These points are relating to us how the internet is used and its many tools in different aspects and what they are used for. What I like most was about the chatroom and social websites. There are so many things such as those mentioned above that are related to the web, and I believe there will be more to come in future.I hope to learn more from new media this term 2.

I am Aceson Aw (1) from class 1A2. I am a thirteen year old from Hwa Chong Instituition. Ever since, joining Hwa Chong, IS ( infocom studies ) was made a compulsory subject for all students and thus added into the msg( mean subject grade). In term 1, IS was about programming, i wasn't very good at IT related stuffs. Yet, i still have to learn about programming! I don't know why but i just can't seem to get what programming is at times. Fortunately for me, I realise that programming was only in term 1, and that term 2 was something new. Now in term 2, I realise that we were into new media. That gave me hope, as I knew that it wasn't as bad as programming, although it wil come back tougher next year in sec 2. And after the first term 2 lesson I rest my mind in peace. A brief introduction about what new media is was given, and basically it was about the internet and daily social interaction related to infocom. I was definately motivated to do even better in term 2 and I am sure the future will be rewarding.
